Mike Heads looks at how to achieve maximum efficiency, reliability and performance from radiator systems.

There are two forms of heat loss from a dwelling: fabric heat loss through the structure, and ventilation heat loss caused by room air changes/ventilation.
To correctly size the boiler and radiators, it is necessary to calculate these losses, and if the boiler provides storage hot water, this would also be added to give the total boiler requirement.

Flexible flues

An investigation by Which? magazine into the cost of a boiler installation shows massive variation in quoted prices. Using British Gas rather than a local installer was revealed to cost 39% more on average.
