- CAT I – Electronic: Rated for small electronics work, battery testing and continuity adjustments in low current applications.
- CAT II – Residential: Rated for single-phase situations for small appliance, socket, plug-in and long branch applications within the home.
- CAT III – Commercial: Rated for three-phase distribution and single-phase commercial high amperage lighting. Includes distribution devices, feeders, industrial plant circuits and high current appliance circuitry.
- CAT IV – Industrial: Rated for three-phase distribution in outdoor and utility applications, including utility power, meters, distribution, over headline and overcurrent protection modules.
Most circuit tracers are rated CAT III, indicating sufficient protection for many residential and commercial applications. For work on higher voltage commercial systems, electricians should select an upgraded CAT III 600V-rated tracer rather than a basic CAT III 480V-rated circuit tracer.
