Heating fan installation will keep students warm

Napier University Students will be kept warm this winter thanks to the installation of Airius fans at the entrance and main atrium area of the University’s Craiglockhart Site.
Napier webThe Scottish University, which has more than 17,000 students and has been established since 1992, is taking advantage of a range of de-stratification systems as part of their ongoing commitment to reduce energy use and limit carbon emissions.
The Airius heating, cooling and air purification systems were installed by Glasgow based renewables experts Absolute following a feasibility study – which considered large areas that were problematic to heat and keep at comfortable temperatures in both summer and winter.
The move sees Absolute embark on another large scale renewable project, after Angus Council installed the Airius heating, cooling and air purification fans back in June 2012. Committed to combating high heating costs, the Council initially installed Airius de-stratification systems in 10 buildings which, in turn, provided a significant return on investment.
Absolute’s head of PV and de-stratification, Andrew McGown, said: “This is a very exciting partnership which follows the success we have had at the Angus Council site. Napier University will now have access to state-of-the-art de-stratification systems that not only help to reduce energy costs, but help to manage the wider environmental impact.
“The products are ideal for large spaces, and we are already working with a number of leading companies across Scotland to help them determine which product is best suited to their needs before pushing ahead with installation. Now, more than ever, companies need to be investing in new ways to reduce their energy costs, and this is the perfect solution.”
The installation certainly comes at the best time for Napier Students as the colder winter months begin to set in and representative Guy Bridges from Airius commented: “Thermal Stratification is the single biggest waste of energy in buildings today and Airius de-stratification systems will reduce both heating and cooling costs by 20-50%.”
“Airius fans are designed to equalise the temperature by continuously moving a column of air to the floor. A typical installation includes a series of units mounted just below the ceiling, evenly spaced throughout a facility, ensuring the column has an unobstructed path to the floor. The options of fans range from Free Hanging, Suspended and The Designer Series, for architecturally sensitive installations.”
