The government’s next road-safety strategy is expected to include tougher measures on driver fitness, including mandatory eyesight tests every three years for drivers over 70.
The current system of licence renewal every three years after reaching 70 does not include a mandatory eyesight test. Instead, it relies on the driver’s declaration of their eyesight and ability to drive safely.
With a fifth of UK tradespeople planning to work beyond the current state pension age of 66, there’s a chance eyesight tests could affect those who use a van; especially when you consider that 7% of men in the trades see themselves working beyond 70.
The average daily distance driven by trades and installers is 88.37 miles, according to a recent Volkswagen survey – though some regions are much higher. For those working well past retirement age, even on a part-time basis, safety is a key consideration – not just for the drivers themselves but also other road users.
The wider government road safety shake-up is expected also to include tougher deterrents on drink and drug driving offences, as well as broader checks on health concerns that affect driving capability. Speaking on the risks associated with driver fitness declarations, Paul Hollick, from the Association of Fleet Professionals, acknowledged the issue: “In terms of over-70s, there are relatively few fleet drivers who fall into this age range, but there are some, especially employed on a casual basis for the occasional driving job.
“Many remain good drivers, but there is an element of risk because of declining eyesight, and any new law introducing a sight test would make it easier for fleets to enforce sensible measures in this area.”
With poor eyesight cited as a factor in several road traffic fatalities in recent years, the pressure is mounting on the government to address concerns with updated legislation.
The practical takeaway is simple: book regular eye tests, wear your prescribed glasses or contacts when driving, and report any relevant conditions to DVLA. This keeps you on the road, protects your business, and keeps everyone safer.
