Nissan’s Townstar compact van has received a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, following the safety body’s shift to a 1–5 star grading system for light commercial vehicles.
Nissan’s Townstar compact van has received a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with the assessment recognising strong crash performance and a wide suite of standard driver-assistance technologies. The rating applies to both the electric and petrol versions, offering additional reassurance for installers and other tradespeople.
The European New Car Assessment Program is an independent authority that conducts safety testing and driver assistance feature assessments for passenger cars, commercial vans, and heavy goods vehicles. The 2025 Euro NCAP test programme includes the use and availability of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), rigorous crash testing, and scenarios that reflect a van’s performance across three areas: safe driving, crash avoidance, and post-crash safety.
Euro NCAP highlighted the Townstar’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system and lane-departure warning as key contributors to the rating. Commenting on the feature, Euro NCAP noted: “Performance is excellent when approaching a stationary or slower-moving car, with collisions avoided in almost all test scenarios. The system performs equally well whether the target vehicle is straight in front of it or offset to one side.’’
The Townstar was also recently named Small Van of the Year 2025, with judges noting its storage options, driver comfort, and availability with both petrol and electric powertrains.
Responding to the Euro NCAP results, Nissan said the rating reflects ongoing work to improve safety across its light commercial vehicle line-up. Francesco Russiello, LCV Category Manager at Nissan, stated that Euro NCAP’s testing “helps consumers understand the safety technologies available” and described the rating as “reassuring for customers”.
The Townstar’s five-star score follows Euro NCAP’s updated testing regime for light commercial vehicles, which evaluates crash protection, pedestrian safety, and the effectiveness of advanced driver-assistance systems. Available with either an electric or petrol powertrain and in multiple body styles, the Townstar is aimed at fleets, sole traders, and last-mile operators looking for a compact van with broad usability.
Nissan says its LCV range has been engineered with a focus on everyday safety, with systems designed to support drivers in urban and congested environments. The rating places the Townstar among the highest-scoring compact vans currently on the market.
