Charging ahead

In January 2012, IET Standards Limited published the first Code of Practice (COP) for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations. Malcolm Doughton considers the main features of this new advisory document.
This first Code of Practice applies to the installation of dedicated conductive charging equipment for the charging of pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric road vehicles, including rangeextended electric vehicles. While it is possible to charge electric vehicles using a 13A/ BS 1363 socket outlet, it was soon established that, as the maximum charging current was 10A, charging times in the region of up to 10 hours were required for even small cars.
It was apparent that an alternative charging method was necessary if the electric vehicle was to become a viable option. Alternatives have been developed and the Code of Practice addresses the options available.
