CIPHE calls for action for apprenticeships in 2022

According to recent statistics, the market for heating products is experiencing a period of significant growth. Sales of gas boilers, radiators and cylinders were all up in 2021 compared to 2020. Yet the stand-out figures were for solar products, which experienced a sales growth of 89%.

These increasing sales create a corresponding demand for more quality heating and plumbing engineers who can competently carry out system installations and maintenance. Due to an ever-widening skills gap in an industry whose experts are disproportionately closer to retirement age, bringing in fresh talent is especially important. And the CIPHE is determined to use its professional expertise and experience to champion the apprenticeship and education route to deliver on this requirement.

The CIPHE has long advocated apprenticeships to get the next generation of plumbing and heating engineers. This is because they provide quality education, hands-on experience, and access to a network of professional contacts. They are often the foundation of a successful career. In fact, three-quarters of the CIPHE’s leadership began their own careers as apprentices.

In 2022, the CIPHE will continue to urge the government to focus its attention on apprenticeships, particularly in an industry with so many sole-traders and micro-SME’s. We will also develop more of our own initiatives, of which the recent collaboration with Ideal Standard is a great example, to provide funding and support to small plumbing and heating businesses. With help from members, we will increase awareness and uptake of existing schemes, such as apprenticeship levies. Our Industrial Associates in the manufacturing, merchant and industry sectors will play a key part by helping us to engage with school career offices in highlighting what a rewarding career the plumbing and heating industry can provide.

The CIPHE will continue to maximise our existing partnerships to share messaging as well as using social channels and our YouTube channel to drive recruitment in 2022/2023. As always, we continue to promote high standards of quality and professionalism, using digital resources to reach as many people as possible.
