The figures come from the Government-backed Go Ultra Low campaign, and indicate motorists could save around £750 annually by switching to ultra-low emission vehicles, with the potential for British motorists to collectively make a significant saving of £24.5bn. To qualify as ultra-low emission, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles states a vehicle must produce 75g/km or less of CO2, which currently only plug-in electric vehicles adhere to. Jerrry Hamilton, Business Development Director of Renewables & Energy Solutions for Rexel Northern Europe, explains: “This new research reaffirms that the savings to be had for consumers using EVs are substantial. Aside from the environmental benefits that a nation driving fuel-free cars presents, the money saved will enable motorists to invest their money elsewhere, such as further home energy improvements. “EVs offer even further benefits of zero rate company car tax and road tax relief. They are also exempt from the London Congestion Charge and can benefit from free parking and designated spaces in many pay and display car parks, not to mention the financial benefit of a reduction in insurance and maintenance costs. “Wider uptake of EVs across the EU is encouraging, with 78,388 cars being sold across the continent in 2015 up until June1, exceeding the 75,331 EV registrations in the whole of 2014.2 With more people becoming aware of the benefits that EVs can offer themselves and the environment, this figure is sure to grow and bring the technology into the mainstream.” He adds: “With the UK’s charging infrastructure continually improving, there is also no longer a need for motorists to be concerned about running out of battery while on the go. Charging points are now abundant across the country, with over 1,400 in London alone, and this figure set to rise to 6,000 by 20183. Coupled with a £9 million Government investment to boost the number of charging points for electric cars, it is the perfect time for consumers to make the switch to plug-in vehicles.” Find out more by visiting www.rexel.com.
