Electrical safety must never be compromised

Working with or near live electrical systems carries serious risks and history shows that even small oversights can result in severe injuries or fatalities.

The most effective way to prevent such incidents is to adopt a disciplined safe isolation process, explains Steve Dunning, managing director at Martindale Electric. 

Too often, accidents occur because workers either assume circuits are safe or cut corners when selecting and applying equipment. Treating safe isolation as non-negotiable practice will help keep both you and your colleagues out of danger. 

Equipment choice matters 

Never underestimate the importance of using the correct tools. Safe isolation should always begin with a voltage indicator and a proving unit, as these allow you to test both the circuit and your instrument reliably. Also essential are locking off devices and these are either supplied as individual items or kits.  

A basic starter set should always include a selection of miniature circuit breaker and breaker locks, a padlock with a unique key or combination, a hasp for when more than one person is working on a system plus an array of lock out tags and warning labels. For the locking off procedure itself, where a distribution board switch or other means of disconnection is used, this should be locked in the off position using a suitable lock with the addition of signage to advise others of the activity. The key or combination lock should be the responsibility of the person doing the work or someone delegated by them.  

It is important that any padlock must have a unique key or combination held by the person carrying out the work to prevent anyone else from removing the lock and inadvertently activating the circuit. Next it is absolutely essential to verify that the circuit is dead before carrying out any work. 

Think ahead 

Locking off is only the first step; never proceed without proving the circuit is truly dead. Relying on labels or assuming that an off switch equals safety has led to too many preventable accidents. Circuits are often mislabelled or incorrectly documented. The only safe approach is to test and here is the correct sequence: 

  • Confirm your voltage indicator is working by testing it against a proving unit.
  • Apply the indicator to the circuit you intend to work on.
  • Re-check the indicator on the proving unit to ensure it has not failed.

This process closes the loop, giving you confidence in both your equipment and the circuit status. It may feel repetitive, but skipping even one of these steps undermines your safety. 

Selection procedure 

Not all testing devices are suitable for proving dead. Dedicated voltage indicators that comply with BS EN61243-3 should be your default choice. Models with high wattage resistors provide an additional safeguard by limiting current if the cable is damaged. Always select equipment that functions without relying on battery power – if a device needs a battery and it’s flat, you cannot prove the circuit is dead. 

For safe isolation, the use of multimeters or non-contact detectors should be avoided. Multimeters depend on correct range selection and battery power, making them prone to possible errors. Non-contact voltage detectors also require a battery to work and are often sensitive to other signals, such as static electricity and cannot be reliably checked with proving units. While useful for identifying live cables, neither should be used to confirm safe isolation. 

Embedding good practice 

The act of proving dead may sound straightforward but building confidence in the process requires more than just tools. It requires culture – an insistence that no task begins until safe isolation is confirmed. Train your teams, share the procedures, and normalise the discipline of testing before touching. Over time, these habits become second nature, protecting not only the person carrying out the work but also colleagues and other trades working nearby.

A – Approved kit 

Start with equipment that complies with safety standards (BS EN61243-3, BS EN61010). 

L – Lock out 

Apply lock-off/tag-out. Identify the isolation point, lock it securely and label it with warning tags. 

I – Initial prove 

Check your voltage indicator against a proving unit before applying it to the circuit. 

V – Voltage test 

Use the indicator to confirm there is no dangerous voltage present. 

– Ensure 

Re-test the indicator on the proving unit afterwards to confirm it remains functional. 

This five-step approach is simple, repeatable and robust. Encourage your team to adopt it as a daily habit – regardless of experience level or task size. 

Taking responsibility 

Every time you approach an electrical system remember that isolation is not just procedure, it is personal protection. Each lock, tag and test is an investment in ensuring that you and your colleagues go home unharmed. There is no acceptable shortcut and no task is urgent enough to justify bypassing the process. 

The reality is clear – accidents caused by unsafe isolation are preventable. With approved equipment, disciplined practice and adherence to the ALIVE framework, the risks of injury or fatality can be reduced.

Advising your teams to consistently follow safe isolation practices is not just about compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations – it is about creating a workplace culture where safety is never compromised. By choosing appropriate equipment, proving circuits dead and embedding the safe isolation steps, you protect both lives and assets. Adopt safe isolation as an uncompromising standard. Make it routine, make it memorable and insist on it at every level.
