Organised and legible labelling is an important part of cable management in electrical installations. Rob Shepherd explains the key considerations and outlines how modern labelling technologies provide durable and highly visible identification.
Electrical installations can involve countless cable connections and when something goes wrong, being able to identify the problem quickly is vital. Clear records and accurate, easy to read cable labels help teams work faster, reduce mistakes and keep systems running safely. In larger facilities, managing this can be challenging, but choosing a reliable labelling system that supports smooth workflows and stays legible over time makes the whole process far more efficient and dependable.
Time is of the essence
Implementing a labelling scheme improves cable tracing, fault finding and repair activities. Beyond simplifying troubleshooting, effective labelling also makes moves, adds and changes far easier to carry out.
Labelling must be consistent across all locations and aligned with the project drawings and building layout, ensuring it is clear, easy to read, durable and capable of lasting for the full life of the labelled component. The labelling system must also be agreed by all stakeholders and applied comprehensively and consistently throughout an installation.
Setting the standard
There are a variety of standards governing cable labelling. To start with, BS 7671 – the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations requires circuits and cables to be clearly identified for safety and maintenance. In addition to BS 7671, manufacturer guidance and site-specific standards may also set expectations for label format, durability and placement.
Furthermore, BS EN IEC 60445 defines the identification of conductors by colours, letters or numbers and BS EN 50334:2001 specifies the marking of electric cables with durable printed or embossed information such as manufacturer, voltage rating and standard reference. In industrial environments BS 1710 may also be referenced where cable identification aligns with service identification principles used for pipes and services.
Labels must use permanent, easily traceable identifiers that can be understood at a glance. Each label must correspond accurately with central records and technical drawings, and every cable should be labelled at both ends, with each label clearly identifying the termination points. In addition, all labels must meet strict requirements for permanence, legibility, resistance to defacement and adhesion. This is defined by UL 969, the most widely recognised global standard for label performance.
Go with the flow
The requirement to produce thousands of labels for even a modest installation – and potentially many more for larger projects – makes workflow efficiency a critical consideration. When this kind of volume is considered, even a difference of a second or two per label can accumulate into a substantial time impact. For example, if 50,000 labels are required, an additional two seconds per application would result in around 27.5 hours of extra work.
It is therefore important to look beyond the print speed of a label printer and consider the entire workflow, including how information is transferred from databases or technical drawings on to the label. Older systems often require technicians to print labels in advance and then carry them to the correct location for installation, which can be time consuming and cumbersome. Efficiency gains can be achieved through in-situ printing with portable devices, allowing labels to be produced and applied exactly where they are needed.
Selection procedure
When selecting a printer, it is advisable to choose one that can print labels directly from commonly used cloud-based cable identification software platforms. Additional efficiencies can be achieved if this functionality is available via a smartphone.
A dedicated app designed to work seamlessly with a printer can further streamline the process, enabling users to quickly design and print labels on demand. Such apps typically provide templates for creating compliant labels for cables and other components, supporting a robust, error free workflow that reduces the time needed to print and apply each label to an absolute minimum.
Clear cut
It is essential to ensure that the labels remain clearly legible for the entire lifespan of the electrical installation. Labels must be able to withstand significant temperature fluctuations, as well as potential abrasion such as rubbing against other cables in a bundle or contact with surrounding surfaces.
Multi-layer labels, which incorporate additional layers for strength and lamination, provide the most durable and reliable results. It is important to choose a label medium that has been rigorously tested against extreme conditions, including temperature, chemicals, sunlight and physical wear, to ensure they meet or exceed the longevity standards set by UL 969.
Thermal transfer technology is currently the leading solution for combining usability with long-lasting performance. When paired with a well-designed multi-layer label system, it produces labels that are virtually indestructible, capable of withstanding even the harshest environments without compromising legibility or adhesion.
Degrees of separation
Much of the durability that keeps labels legible over time comes from lamination, which shields the printed surface from direct contact with the surrounding environment. Using a pre-laminated label medium offers clear advantages, saving time and ensuring consistent protection without additional steps.
Some labels that are not pre-laminated include a separate laminating strip, but this must be applied manually to each label during installation. This not only adds extra work, reducing overall efficiency, but also risks labels being left unprotected if the lamination is overlooked. An effective alternative is heat-shrink tubing, which provides equally robust identification. After printing, the tube is slipped over the cable and heated until it shrinks tightly around it, forming a secure and durable label.

Effective labelling makes it much easier to identify electrical cables, which saves time when troubleshooting, carrying out repairs or making changes. Thanks to modern mobile printing and advanced label technology, electrical contractors can now achieve a much higher standard of cable management without slowing down on-site.
