Heat pumps perfect choice for holiday homes

A development of four refurbished stone built holiday homes, known as ‘Farndale Cottages’, based in the rural village of Church Houses in Farndale in North Yorkshire, is benefiting from renewable energy from a heat pump system manufactured by Danfoss in Sheffield.

Local planning conditions meant that Harland Builders were required to make use of renewable energy and the company specified a district heating, ground source heat pump system to supply all the hot water and heating needs of the five cottages.
Danfoss-approved installer Pure Renewables, based in Hull, designed the bespoke district heating system, which included a 26kW DHP-S ground source heat pump, which was housed in an external plant room which was centrally located within the development.  The heat pump extracts heat from the ground via 1,500 metres of ground loop, which were laid in land adjacent to the properties.
The heat pump system supplies the cottages via a 750 litre buffer and 1,000 litre hot water tank.  Each cottage has been installed with underfloor heating throughout to provide optimum running efficiency of the heat pump.  The scheme is expected to save 20,000kg of Carbon Dioxide per annum.
Chris Whitelock, Managing Director of Pure Renewables, said: “These properties are in a stunning rural location, so heat pumps were the perfect choice for making best use of renewable energy through ground source heat pumps.  Visitors to these stunning holiday cottages should enjoy the comfort and easy control of this innovative, sustainable heat pump system.”
George Harland, Managing Director of Harland Builders, said; “These holiday cottages will have minimal impact on the environment and will be very affordable to run.  We are very pleased with the heat pump system designed by Pure Renewables, it was the ideal choice in this off-gas area.”
The Danfoss DHP-S is a high-capacity heat pump designed for use in large homes and the light commercial sector. It offers outstanding performance and capacity, combined with upgrade flexibility and a streamlined control system that simplifies operation and keeps costs down.
Chris Dale, Director of Danfoss Ltd., said: “Many developers of high specification properties are choosing to fit heat pumps, due to their affordable running costs, sustainability and greater efficiency than some traditional heating methods.  They were a great choice for these holiday cottages, as customers looking to visit this stunning area will be drawn by the fact that they will have minimal impact on the environment, whilst they will be able to enjoying the comforts of consistent heat and efficiently produced hot water from this unique type of district heating system.”
Danfoss Ltd. has extensive experience in the manufacture of heat pump systems for homes, schools, community buildings, developers, local authorities, housing associations and self builders.
