A growing number of British households are buying into the benefits of smart thermostats that allow them to control their heating at the touch of a button.
These smart systems, such as Navien’s Smart Plus controller, not only help homeowners reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint but also gives them full visibility and control of their energy usage with the help of artificial intelligence and intuitive software.
Here Gavin Edwards, Training Manager at Navien UK, outlines how installers can set up Navien’s Smart Plus control system in customers’ homes.
On your mark, set up, go!
Firstly, it is crucial to understand the number of controllers required and where the homeowner is looking to position them throughout the property. If there are no additional Smart Plus controllers to the master thermostat, then there are just a few simple steps you need to take to quickly and effectively complete the set-up process.
Connect and play
Once the boiler has been installed with the wireless communication module connected, setting up the thermostatic controller couldn’t be easier. Simply power on the boiler, insert batteries into the controller and within five minutes the thermostat and the boiler will be connected, communicating and ready to go.
Now that the master controller is set-up, the customer can decide on the best place in their home to position the controller, this should be somewhere that is easy to monitor the room or home temperature.
Bonus tip: This controller serves as the master controller and allows users to also access the domestic hot water (DHW) programme functions.
Zoning
For households looking to create different heating environments throughout the property to suit the varying needs of its occupants, Navien’s Smart Plus control pack can be used to create up to three separate heating zones utilising the multiple controls and the wireless wiring centre.
Once the wiring centre has been connected to the zoning valves you can then begin this set-up. Unbox the two additional controllers near the boiler for ease of access to the wireless communication module. The primary control can be put to one side as it is already paired.
Add batteries to one of the Smart Plus controllers which will power on this device. Turning the dial will allow you to set the zone number. The master thermostat has already connected to the wireless communication module and occupies zone number one, so select either zone two or three.
To connect the extra controllers to the wireless communication module, press and hold the radio frequency (RF) button on the receiver until you get the red flashing light, then release.
You then have roughly five minutes to pair the other zone controls and the wiring centre.
Go to each additional control (two and three), pressing and holding the ‘enter’ and ‘programme’ buttons together until ‘pair’ is displayed.
Press the pairing button on the wiring centre and within 30 seconds the light on this unit will go solid blue. This is the pairing function.
When these have been set, you will need to wait for the pairing to complete. You will notice the light change to green meaning it is confirming the paired controls and is nearing completion, and on completion will turn to a solid blue.
Each unit when paired will hold the zone number followed by the RF signal strength displayed, showing the device has paired successfully.
Once this has been completed, each device can be situated in three separate locations throughout the home, creating climate zones to meet the homeowner’s requirements.
Error: No signal.
If you find that a Smart Plus controller is showing no RF signal in the top left-hand corner of the device, or there’s no solid blue light on the wireless communication module then you may have encountered an error while setting this up. To fix this, simply follow this process again but only for the device you’re experiencing issues with.
Bonus tip: These devices can take up to five minutes to pair so be sure to give them time to connect before deciding to restart the process.
Last step: Discover more from Navien.
Navien’s Smart Plus controllers enable users to access far more via the smartphone app, including Geofencing and OpenWeatherMap capabilities. Its newly launched Smart Plus ON AI controller, featuring AI technology features firmware over the air (FOTA) updates, and Home Energy Management System (HEMS) reports to provide household usage data, while Smart Diagnostics with self-testing helps to identify boiler issues before they become a more serious problem.
