The Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) considers the design, construction and use of a dwelling, and rates it on a scale of 1 to 6 to show how environmentally friendly it is. Robin Oakley analyses how the Code affects plumbers and heating engineers.
The Government’s objective is to reduce CO2 emissions that result from fuel usage in dwellings for lighting, and heating and power. Compliance with the Code will minimise this impact on the environment. It is a national standard but, unlike Building Regulations, compliance to the CSH is not mandatory, although it is closely linked to Building Regulations Approved Document Part L.
The construction industry is the largest UK consumer of natural resources – i.e. energy, water, materials and land. A sustainable development can be described as one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the future and focuses on environmental protection and economic and social development.
