An electrician posted on Reddit sharing his “worst day” and asked who could relate – and some of the responses were a sobering reminder of the potential danger faced by electricians.
The electrician was inspired to post after blowing up “a lighting control panel and tripping a 4000 amp main and taking power out to 5 businesses”.
At the time of writing, the post has received 70 comments, with fellow sparks sharing the worst things they’ve experienced on the tools.
Many of the comments detail serious injuries and near-misses, with one Reddit user saying “electricity is not something to mess around with”.
One said:
“Was a second year apprentice and instructed to remove a 600v baseboard heater that was supposed to be dead.. it was not.”
Another added:
“The worst was having to replaced the ABT in the boiler room, for the ventilation system. There was a steam leak near the work area, 1200 lbs steam (900°). We could only spend 15 minutes in the space at a time. Total misery on that job.”
On a lighter note, one responder said he saw a broom once, poking fun by adding that it was a “big stick with a weird looking mustache on the end. The carpenter guy says they use them to do something called ‘cleaning up after themselves’ not sure what that means though.”
We asked the InstallerSHOW community about their “worst day” and one plumber said: “Flooded a house on handover day when I was an apprentice.”
A heating engineer said: “The boiler service in a 2-bed house with 27 cats – definitely in the top 10.”
