Should installers focus on franchising?

In October 2014, HomeServe Alliance launched its UK heating franchise, with the aim of increasing revenues for local heating installers.
homeserveteaching webThree months on, HomeServe Alliance’s partners include Safegas in Yorkshire, rightgas in North London, Walker Gas Services in Edinburgh, Laker Home Care in Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield, KNW in Newcastle and Frontline in Warrington –all of who have been offered a unique territory across the UK.
Steve Emmerson, MD of HomeServe Alliance Franchising said: “We were delighted to have launched our franchise business in October after successfully trialling with partners across the country. We aim to partner with 160 heating companies across the UK with the objective of significantly increasing their turnover.”
Partners will be offered a unique territory and HomeServe Alliance will manage all of their digital, marketing and sales requirements with the aim of driving quality leads to the business. As part of the partnership, the business will also offer sales training to ensure the leads are converted to jobs.
Emmerson continued: “When we are looking for partners, we seek business owners of local heating organisations who are focussed on delivering unsurpassed customer services. This is what makes the partnership work. We remain focussed on delivering leads and the local businesses can stay focussed on providing a great service.”
The franchise arrangement aims to increase the turnover for heating companies by employing the latest digital and marketing techniques, as well as ensuring local companies can benefit from economy of scale of working with a national business.
HomeServe Alliance was the brainchild of entrepreneur Richard Harpin, who built HomeServe plc to a global organisation over the last twenty years. Harpin recognised that homeowners were looking for credible local heating engineers, with the backing of a national organisation. As part of Harpin’s vision he has built an organisation bringing together the best digital entrepreneurs and marketing talent from heating and gas sector. The company is run by digital entrepreneur Greg Jackson, with Steve Emmerson as Managing Director, Franchising. Emmerson is a franchise industry leader, having most recently been Managing Director for ServiceMaster Ltd, with responsibility for the development and strategic management of ServiceMaster Ltd and its 320 franchisees.

[box type=”shadow” align=”aligncenter” ]Walker Gas Services was one of HomeServe Alliance’s trial partners. They decided to be an official partner when the program launched in October as they had already seen the benefits in their business.
Steve Walker, MD of Walker Gas Services said: “In early 2014 we joined forces with HSA to test a new concept for the Heating Market, and just a few months later, we are delighted to sign an agreement to join the franchise network. In fact, it would have been very short sighted, not to join the Alliance to supply Gas Service and boiler installations across our Lothian area. Everybody here at Walker Gas, and especially me, believes that this is going to be a very successful period for Walkers, after a long tough period in this industry. Over the initial 6 months, the support and training we have received has already set a solid foundation in place, and is proving what HomeServe Alliance can do for Walker Gas Services.
“We have seen a conversion rate of 45% on boiler installs and there is potential for even more. I’d go as far as to say, that it feels like a new company is forming for us here at Walker Gas Services – such exciting times. This partnership has given me and Walker Gas Services a much clearer vision of what can be achieved, and how we will continue to grow, with the continued commitment from all the staff at Walker Gas and HomeServe Alliance”[/box]
