Martyn Brown, contracts and technical manager at Triton Showers, reveals the practical tips and solutions installers can share with customers to reduce water consumption and household bills.
After another summer of extreme heat, households across the nation are understandably concerned about water scarcity. Bills, meanwhile, are on the rise, but that shouldn’t mean that the water we do use ends up rinsing wallets instead.
As one of the largest consumers of water in the home, the shower is an ideal place to start when it comes to cutting consumption and saving a few pounds. Here are some tips you can share with customers to ease their concerns while improving water efficiency:
- Every minute matters
Recent research suggests that people estimate their showers last around 11 minutes on average, but many don’t realise how much money goes down the drain during that time.
To put this into perspective, a family of three using a 9.5 kW electric shower and taking 11-minute showers spends around £562 per year. Simply reducing each shower to eight minutes could lower that figure to approximately £423, delivering annual savings of around £139.
Shorter showers reduce both water and energy demand immediately, making this one of the easiest and most effective ways to cut household bills.
- Electric avenue
Does your customer still have a mixer shower? If so, switching to an electric model can be another smart way to save water.
Electric showers only heat water when it’s needed, making them far more energy efficient than heating an entire hot water tank. They also eliminate the need to wait a couple of minutes (or even longer during the winter months) for the shower to warm up.
This can waste tens of litres per shower, which is particularly significant in water-stressed areas where consumption targets can be as low as 110 litres per person per day.
- Stop the clock
The latest electric showers are equipped with a host of features that make saving water and energy even easier. Eco-mode buttons and timer features, such as those available on Triton’s ENVi and ENlight, help customers monitor and limit shower time without constantly checking the clock.
Some systems even allow users to set time limits, encouraging more efficient habits automatically. These features can make a real difference, helping households conserve resources without compromising on comfort.

- See what you can save
Providing with personalised estimates can be a real motivator for change. Tools like Triton’s energy and water savings calculator allow users to input information including:
- The number of people in their household
- The number of showers per week
- Average shower duration
- Preferred shower temperature
- Shower type (electric or mixer)
The calculator then estimates annual water and energy costs, while also translating consumption into relatable comparisons, such as the equivalent number of 500ml water bottles, tumble-dryer loads and miles driven in a family car. It also highlights the potential savings available if shower duration is reduced by just three minutes.
When customers can actually see the impact of their habits, they’re often more inclined to make changes. I’d even encourage you to try the calculator and see what savings are available in your house.
