Using engineered timber in bathrooms

Whether used as flooring, incorporated into vanity units or added as wall cladding, wood brings natural texture and warmth to a room that can otherwise feel dominated by cooler materials. Anthony Scott, Global Product and Innovation Director at Havwoods, explains.

For many years, bathrooms have been defined by hard, practical surfaces such as ceramic, porcelain and stone. While these materials remain important in areas exposed to water, homeowners are increasingly looking beyond purely functional finishes.

The use of timber is becoming part of this shift.

What type of wood flooring works in bathrooms?

As a natural material, wood responds to changes in humidity and moisture. This is why engineered wood flooring offers a more practical alternative to solid wood. Made with a multi-layered construction featuring a real wood surface bonded to a stable supporting core beneath, it helps reduce natural movement in the floor, making it better suited to rooms where moisture levels can rise and fall.

Bathrooms are increasingly being designed as sanctuaries within the home, which is why the choice of materials is so important. Engineered timber is a great choice for well-ventilated bathroom spaces, bringing underfoot warmth and natural character to a room that can otherwise feel dominated by harder, colder surfaces.

Thanks to its stable multi-layered construction, engineered timber is less susceptible to shrinking or swelling than solid wood, making it a practical solution for environments where moisture levels can fluctuate. When specified correctly and maintained properly, it delivers both the durability required for everyday life and the long-lasting appeal of real wood.

Can timber be used in all bathrooms?

As a natural material, water does still affect wood if exposed to water over long periods of time, so we’d recommend only using timber in well-ventilated bathrooms, such as larger family bathrooms. Larger rooms with effective ventilation, open windows and good airflow are less likely to retain excess moisture after bathing or showering. Wipe up splashes as soon as possible and opt for an oiled finish to help resist the moisture while allowing the wood to breathe.

In contrast, compact en-suites and windowless shower rooms are more challenging, particularly where humidity and moisture levels remain much higher due to less airflow. In these spaces, it is important to consider the amount of direct water exposure and ensure that ventilation is sufficient before looking at specifying timber.

Where does timber work best?

Timber flooring works beautifully as the main flooring material in a bathroom, bringing continuity from an adjoining bedroom or dressing room, but it is worth combining with other more water-resistant materials in the areas where it really matters.

One of the most practical ways to use timber in a bathroom is to combine it with tiled areas around baths, showers and basins. Creating a tiled splash zone in the areas most exposed to water helps protect the floor while still allowing the character and warmth of wood to be used throughout much of the space. It’s a solution that works particularly well in larger bathrooms, where homeowners want the comfort and visual appeal of timber underfoot without exposing the entire floor to regular moisture.

What’s the best finish?

When recommending engineered timber for a bathroom, oiled floors are often a good option because they help protect the surface while allowing the timber to retain its natural appearance. They can also be maintained easily over time, rather than requiring the entire floor to be refinished.

Brushed or textured timber finishes can also be more forgiving in busy family bathrooms, helping to disguise the minor marks and everyday wear that come with an active household. Paler tones can help make a room feel brighter, while warmer mid-oak finishes can bring depth and a more cocooning feel.
