Let’s get digital!

As the digital craze is sweeping the nation, Andy Mansfield explains how installers can use it to their advantage and get ahead of the competition.
With so many installers competing for the same market share, it’s important that installers raise their profiles to remain visible and easy to find for homeowners. Considering that in Q1 of 2013 alone, an estimated 43.5million adults used the internet for research and information purposes, online is the best place to start.
Developing an online profile is crucial to ensure an installer is visible to their potential customers. Again, tying up with manufacturers is a great way to do this as many host a ‘Find an Installer’ section on their website, which installers can sign up to.
Honeywell alone found that more than 40% of its online traffic in 2012 was actually from the consumer, showing that homeowners are using manufacturer’s websites in order to learn about heating controls and their benefits. Installers, therefore, need to make sure they are not missing out on this profile-raising opportunity.
Online information
Building a strong relationship with a homeowner and winning their trust is key in order to secure new and repeat business from them. Sometimes, an installer’s ‘word’ alone may not be enough to do this, which is why it’s important for an installer to keep up to date with the latest information and incentives provided by manufacturers. Many manufacturers provide tools for an installer to use to help them explain the benefits of heating controls and the options that exist for their customers.
Get Appy
For a busy installer, accessing information on the move is vital. Manufacturers now offer mobile optimised websites and specially-developed apps to provide latest news, legislation, product updates and tips for installers to access from anywhere at any time.
The latest ‘Installer Assistant’ app from Honeywell – which has received more than 3,000 downloads already since its launch in August – guides installers through the entire set up and installation phase for their Sundial  RF² heating control packs, CM900 programmable room thermostats and ST9000 timers. The app also prompts the installer on which questions they need to ask to ensure the heating controls are set up exactly to the homeowner’s liking.  It can assist you in keeping a diary note of the next annual service reminder, alerting the installer to re-contact their customer to help them secure repeat business.
Honeywell’s original ‘Wiring Guides’ app, which launched in 2012, has also been downloaded by around 30,000 users.
As an installer, staying ahead and upselling in the current economic climate can be tough, but one thing for certain is that installers need to invest as much time as possible into researching the information and tools that are available to them online.
Every installer needs to be equipped with advice and information on how heating controls can really benefit their customers in a bid to upsell their services – and the internet is the perfect way to keep on top of the latest news, products and developments.
