TRVs are not a new thing, but they are a hot topic at the moment! At the start of the summer, legislation changes were made to Part L regulations and then guidance was produced by BEAMA to easily explain what it meant.
The team behind the renowned Pegler Terrier TRV, a proven solution for installers across the generations, share the top three things you need to know to ensure you, and the systems you work on, remain compliant.
Why the changes happened
There is little surprise that as part of the drive towards net zero, regulations would be created to ensure the benefits that TRVs bring would be fully exploited.
The latest changes only seek to reinforce what many installers already know; however, you will need to ensure that compliance is achieved in line with the new legislation to help homeowners lower their carbon footprint and manage their energy costs even more effectively, which can be as much as £1000 over the lifetime of a new boiler according to the latest figures from BEAMA. It’s a statistic that can really help customers especially as energy bills continue to rise alarmingly.
1. What the changes mean
Part L pertains to energy conservation in our homes and is part of the Government’s targets of reducing UK carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.
Because about 80% of energy in homes is attributed to heating and hot water, it is clear that steps had to be taken and legislation introduced to make this mandatory. Now in England, from June, installers are obliged to either fit new TRVs when replacing a boiler or ensure that the ones already on the system are fit for purpose and working to maximum efficiency.
2. What impact the changes will have
The cost savings that effective TRVs can have should not be underestimated either. In research by the University of Salford it was found that, when used typically, a heating system that was fitted with TRVs would use ‘around 18% less energy’ when compared to the same system without TRVs.’
With a further hike in energy prices expected in the autumn, this change to regulations is a welcome one for consumers!
3. Why quality TRVs matter
The Pegler Terrier TRV was the first radiator valve to be manufactured in the UK in the 1990s by iconic plumbing brand, Pegler. Today Pegler Terrier TRVs and MRVs command the largest share of the UK market, with over 20 million already fitted, and continue to be manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art manufacturing and plating facility in Yorkshire.

The latest Pegler Terrier TRV is optimised to deliver the best results possible, and its performance sets it apart from its competitors. Enhanced by a pure copper element, the performance provides a faster response to temperature changes. Technical tests have shown that this latest Pegler Terrier provides even better accuracy for temperature settings with a 33% lower hysteresis, therefore, reaching comfort levels in a significantly reduced time when compared with other TRVs on the market.
In addition to enhanced performance, the new Pegler Terrier TRV range supports installers with a variety of sizes and benefits. It is supplied suitable for 8, 10 and 15mm pipework and is also offered in a tamper resistant option. It fully complies with the requirements of EN215 – it is also “A” rated under the TELL scheme. The valve carries the CEN symbol and the manufacturer’s identification number to confirm its compliance. It also carries a five-year warranty against manufacturing or material defect.
Installers also like the simplicity of the installation that a Pegler Terrier TRV brings. With minimum specialist tools required, and push fit and compression options available, replacing an existing TRV is a straightforward process. Once the system has been re-commissioned it is easy for installers to direct their customers to the user guide that is attached to the neck of each valve so that they can understand how TRVs can help them increase energy efficiency and decrease costs.
Overall, the legislation has just confirmed what installers have known for years, quality TRVs such as the Pegler Terrier brand, can, and do, make a real difference and as we approach the winter months their performance, accuracy and functionality will be invaluable to many households across the nation.
