The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has announced the Spending Review, with the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) budget reduced by 8%.
Plumb Center’s Head of Sustainability Tim Pollard gives his view:
26 June, the Chancellor outlined his latest round of spending cuts, with plans to save £11.5bn and decrease the national deficit.
“It’s never nice to hear about cuts to any sector, but we understand that times are tough and the government has to do what it thinks is best to improve the economy.
“At Plumb Center we work closely with DECC, and are in full support of its energy initiatives like the Green Deal, Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
“Although DECC’s budget has been cut 8%, I’m sure it will continue to work hard to lower carbon emission and fuel prices, and find the best ways to power our nation affordably and cleanly.
“The Chancellor mentioned rising oil prices early in his speech, which shows how much of an issue this is. I don’t think anyone can argue that the government and the energy sector need to work together to tackle rising fuel costs, and bring affordable heating to homes.
“I’m pleased the government is spending more than ever on renewables because the UK has legally binding carbon emission targets to hit, and biomass boilers, heat pumps and solar are all great ways to produce clean energy.
“Through our renewable training courses, Plumb Center is working hard to give installers all the tools they need to fit clean heating systems, expand their businesses and save their customers’ money.”
