We all know about Twitter’s Friday Follow, but the renewables sector now has a Friday Follow (#FF) all of its own. #FF is a hashtag used to promote other users to your existing Twitter followers – on a Friday you simply tweet the Twitter handle of the company or person you want to your followers to follow, hence the title follow Friday.
Now Manchester-based Everlasting Marketing & PR is urging the renewables, energy efficiency and sustainability sectors to join its #RenewableFF initiative with the aim of promoting prominent accounts to like-minded companies to help boost the profile of the sector and those working in it.
According to Everlasting, there are three main commercial benefits to this: Improved SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) value; networking opportunities and lead generation.
Improved SEO
Using Google as the primary search engine, websites with strong social media activity will benefit from greater SEO* than websites that don’t use and integrate their social media accounts. Posting strong content on Twitter and having followers read it, re-tweet it and favourite it will improve SEO value. Everlasting says that as we are one big community we can all help each other by re-tweeting and promoting each other’s accounts and thus their websites.
Networking
Babak Daemi, Everlasting, said: “The best way to describe the networking benefits is to use a show, such as Energy Efficiency Shows. Although you go to the show to sell to the visitors, you will often benefit commercially from the conversations you have with other exhibitors. That’s what having a Twitter hashtag can offer us. An online place to meet other companies and open dialogue with them. The difference with Twitter and a show is that Twitter gives us the opportunity to do this all day every day.”
Lead Generation
Finally, but most importantly, lead generation. Using #RenewableFF will grow the online renewable community to a size that means Twitter will become a large lead generation tool for the industry. An example of how this will work is “a training provider (one social media-savy company springs to mind) could be regularly selling services through Twitter. As the renewable community grows and actively seeks to re-tweet and promote each other the tweets have more reach, communicating the message to a larger audience creating potential leads.
“Let’s get the #RenewableFF trending and support each other online. I will be doing this on Friday, will you? “Asked Daemi.

*SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is simply the extent to which your website is optimised for search engines such as Google. The better the SEO the higher your website will rank and the more customers you will get.
