I have been up to quite a lot since the installment of my last blog, helping to finish the project at Wood Street, trying to complete as much practical and theory work at college as possible this year, and also was lucky enough to go on holiday to the Dominican Republic for two weeks.
As said in previous blogs, the work on site is moving at a very fast pace – everyone has their own tasks, and deadlines to keep to… e.g. I might be told to fireproof all the HDPE pipework on a certain floor in that day, whilst someone else will be told to test the carbon chilled beam pipework that day.
I am the only Designer Group apprentice at Wood Street now, my mate Lewis (the other mechanical apprentice) has been moved to a reasonably new job/site at Embankment. Being the only apprentice on site has led to me not really having a specific job everyday. Everyday is different depending on what my supervisor wants me to do; sometimes I’ll be working individually to get something finished, or I’ll be working and helping an operative to finish some work – it all depends on priorities, and what works need to be completed first. I’ve also got the chance to try my hand at other trades for example, doing some lagging – which I am pleased with, because it gives me the chance to learn and develop new skills.
From the time I am writing this blog, I will only have 2 weeks of college left for my first year, I will return for my second year after a 6 week break (I still have to go to work!). This means that we are working hard to finish as much work as we can before the break in order to make life easier for ourselves next year – before we break up I aim to have completed half the practical workshop folder, and also to of passed 5 tests in theory.
In other news I managed to pass my ‘Communications at work’ test with a score of 80 per cent, and was also assessed and reviewed on site by my JTL assessor (Who I will be working through my NVQ portfolio with over the next year).
