I’m sure you can all guess where I’m working; I’ve said it enough times, and your correct Wood Street! Its not that I don’t like the site, its been really interesting to witness how a job can develop from an absolute mess into a newly developed office and retail block – although I’m ready for a change of scenery. Our target is to get off the job in late August / Early September, which means everyone is working hard to finish tasks, while being careful with all the completed works surrounding us! (Finished toilet blocks etc.).
Being so late on in the job, I have been carrying out a wide array of tasks day in, and day out – from Painting pipework carrying Gas the required yellow colour, Painting exposed iron pipework and fittings with Red Oxide (to stop it from rusting), to helping operatives finish up in the plant room – for example the day before writing this I was aiding a pipefitter when installing a water softener, which is essential for preventing build up of lime scale in the system. I find it really interesting to work in and around plant rooms, as it helps me to get my head around the different systems at play in different buildings, and how they work, can be installed, commissioned and maintained.
I have now finished my first year at college, meaning that I’m exactly half way through achieving my NVQ level 2 qualification. Although I started the course at a later stage than all my classmates, we are all at the same stage with the same amount of tests passed (5), and we are also at the same stage when completing our practical folders. I’m looking forward to next year at college where I will only have 4 more tests to pass, and only half the practical folder left to complete – although I will be doing most of the work in my NVQ evidence portfolio next year; which includes evidencing pictures of me performing different tasks and writing up about them – this will be the same for all JTL apprentices, and our assessor will help us with anything that we need.
