WIT Conference 4 July 2024 – Why greater inclusivity can help our mental health

Women Installers Together (WIT), the only all day, annual, free event for all tradeswomen and trainees is almost here, on 4 July.

WIT remains the only full day (10-4) event in UK for all tradeswomen and will be held again at The Great Hall, London Metropolitan University, Holloway Road N7, starting with drinks and pastries from 9.30am.

The event expects up to 200 tradeswomen and female trainees and will feature discussions, round tables, lunch, keynote talk from speaker and solo adventurer Anna McNuff and the usual raffle, goody bags and opportunities to talk to other tradeswomen, MC and founder Hattie Hasan MBE and our excellent and supportive sponsors.

The day’s theme is maintaining resilience against the odds – something most tradeswomen need to be highly skilled at doing. Every year we meet women who’ve never met another tradeswoman, so they function in complete isolation from others like themselves. Our industry acknowledges it has more than its share of mental health issues and an horrific suicide rate of 2 per week, among its dominant group – what can it learn from the tiny percentage of women in it?

For the women and other minorities attending WIT, this rare opportunity not to be alone can provide a chance to share experiences and recognise strengths they may not realise they had, for the industry at large, there are useful lessons. Rather than continuing to ask ‘why so few women?’ industry leaders can take away key pointers on what needs to change to create a healthier, more inclusive, more attractive culture that is good for everyone in it.
