Sharpen up and stay ahead

Staying ahead of the competition is high up on any installer’s agenda but often this is easier said than done. Installer spoke to a sample of Honeywell’s Installer Network to get some tips on simple steps to sharpen up their knowledge and improve best practice.
Training can be expensive and sometimes it can be confusing knowing where to go for the right resources, information and advice. However, installers need to be remember that improving their skills and expanding their portfolio of services will ultimately help them drive business forward in the competitive market place.
Take advantage of your manufacturer
Many manufacturers are starting to develop new ways to help installers. Some now offer apps, which are compatible with smart phones and tablet devices, that installers can access while on the move. From wiring guides to ‘assistant’ apps that take you through the entire product set up process, there are apps out there that have been designed specifically to help installers do their job more efficiently.
Many manufacturers also offer installer loyalty schemes or networks that give members access to information, tools and support to help them drive business. Partnering with a manufacturer can also help raise your profile in front of homeowners. ‘Find an installer’ databases are a great way for installers to increase their visibility and, in turn, their chances to secure new business.
Read!
This doesn’t have to mean trawling through hefty manuals and reports. Good manufacturers will keep their installers up to date on a regular basis through various accessible and easily-digestible means. Whether it’s via email, their website, newsletters or product updates – it’s really important for installers to read and make use of this valuable information. Industry magazines are also an excellent source and most now have an online presence for instant updates on breaking news.
Diversify and embrace energy efficiency
What may have been good practice a couple of years ago may not necessarily be the case now so installers should constantly be adapting their offering and embracing the new products that arrive on the market. Consumers are becoming more savvy, and a rapidly increasing number of homeowners are looking to convenient, wireless energy efficient products to reduce their carbon footprint and, ultimately, cut down their heating bills. Being able to offer customers the best available technologies will substantially put you ahead of the competition, as well as keeping the homeowner happy and loyal to you.
Communicate with the customer
Consumers, now more than ever, have boundless access to information online so are becoming more and more knowledgeable. It’s vital therefore that installers keep on top of legislation and new developments within the industry to ensure they can respond correctly and confidently to questions or worries the homeowner may have as a result.
Clearly, it’s important from a commercial aspect for installers to complete a job quickly and efficiently, but it’s also important to spend time consulting with the homeowner – whether that’s asking them questions or responding to their queries. Doing this will instil trust in the relationship and increase the likelihood of loyalty, repeat business and positive word of mouth in the long run.
