Tested To Extremes


We caught up with Vaillant to discuss the lengths that they go to ensure their products perform at their best – wherever and whenever they’re used.

With more focus on heat pumps than ever before in our industry, you’ll be familiar with Vaillant’s efforts to support installers with the transition to low carbon tech. But what you may not know is the level of research and development (R&D) that goes into ensuring that all products are not only highly efficient, but also easy to install, maintain and service – and that they’ll work anywhere, in all conditions.

High-tech testing

Vaillant Group produces around two million gas heating appliances every year for customers in more than 60 countries. At their high-tech test centre in Remscheid, Germany their products are put through a range of gruelling tests to make sure they can withstand the harshest conditions.

The ultra-modern test rigs and special laboratories in the centre allow Vaillant to check, examine and certify all stages of product development, from the prototype phase to series production – all under one roof.

The centre has nine different laboratory areas and more than 180 test stands. These include a drop temperature room, a wind test room and a sprinkler laboratory for testing against moisture. Every product range undergoes more than 100 different rigorous tests – which helps the team at Vaillant to learn more about things like material properties, noise emissions or electromagnetic compatibility.

Climate trials

Take the award-winning aroTHERM plus heat pump – which from 2022 will be manufactured in the UK – as an example. During testing, the heat pump is exposed to a range of extreme conditions to ensure its quality, reliability, safety and efficiency. In these state-of-the-art climate chambers, temperatures from -20°C to +30°C and humidity levels of 30-95% are simulated to ensure that the aroTHERM plus is suitable for use in virtually any location in the world.

The information received from these tests help Vaillant to develop future products. Meaning premium quality and highly efficient products are delivered to homeowners, as well as being user-friendly with easy set-up to continue to make the life easier for installers.

As well as investing in research and development of all their products, Vaillant put particular emphasis on supporting installers with their training and development needs, especially when it comes to diversifying their business into new revenue streams, such as heat pumps.

The recently launched e-learning platform, the Vaillant Academy, is designed to support installers even further. This platform enables installers to learn in the comfort of their own homes or on the go, without the need to take time off the road.
