Town redevelopment will create local apprenticeships

The development of the former Sussex House site will bring opportunities for young people to gain work experience and undertake apprenticeships supported by Central Sussex College.
McLaren Construction has just secured a contract – alongside Land Securities – to deliver phase one of the multi-million pound contract to carry out the long-awaited Town Centre North regeneration project. The £39 million contract will see McLaren carry out demolition work, asbestos removal and the construction itself.
As part of the project, McLaren has pledged to provide work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.
The plans for the former Sussex House site include a Morrisons superstore, a 110- bed Travelodge hotel, a multi-storey car park and three additional restaurant units.
Dean Wynter, director of the faculty of Construction at Central Sussex College, said: “Working alongside MacLaren, we will be able to provide a valuable opportunity for students to gain real on-site experience – they will be able to make weekly visits to the site to help develop their knowledge and complete project work.”
The College’s Job Shop and Apprenticeship Manager Jane Williams added: “We’re looking forward to supporting MacLaren in recruiting apprentices for the redevelopment – being involved with the regeneration of the town centre will be a fantastic start to a career in construction trades.”
MacLaren is also promising to offer employment opportunities locally and appoint companies based in the town for sub-contractor work.
It is hoped the work will be completed with units opening by the end of 2013.
