Kevin Wellman, CEO of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) welcomes the Government’s new Traineeship programme, which could be in place by September 2013.
The Traineeships programme would provide young people aged 16 to 24 with a tailor-made package of support that will give them the confidence, skills and experience to compete in the labour market with more experienced adults.
“Young people need as much educational support as possible to reach the high standards demanded by employers – hopefully, this new programme will increase their chances,” said Mr Wellman.
The Institute’s Education and Training Group (ETG) has been concerned by the lack of basic maths and English skills displayed by a number of students already in apprenticeships. The Traineeship programme aims to get students up to GCSE grade C or equivalent, or better.
“Traineeships could help on so many levels,” continued Mr Wellman. “Communication skills are very important, as well as knowing how to apply for a job or an apprenticeship.”
However, he added: “Inspiring young adults to aspire is commendable but it is vital that any subsequent apprenticeship is fit for purpose by providing a meaningful vocational qualification in addition to mentoring support and experience over a number of years.”
