The Piano Building in Kidderminster is a Grade II listed structure that was originally built in 1867 as a wool warehouse. Over time it was used for different purposes, including as an education centre, before becoming empty in 2019. Purchased by Wyre Forest District Council in 2024, the Piano Building project is part of the town’s wider regeneration programme and it has now been repurposed into a modern mixed use facility that includes co-working and hybrid working spaces, entertainment space and restaurants.
West Midlands-based electrical contracting firm, Barrie Beard, was appointed to carry out the electrical installation work and needed to deliver a new, high performance lighting and controls system for the building. After assessing the available options, Luceco was able to provide a complete solution that met the brief.
Prior to the project start Luceco carried out a demonstration to explain the controls offering and outline the potential savings the client could achieve.
It then recommended a carefully selected range of high performance luminaires to meet the various lighting requirements of the Piano Building.
The solution included Luceco’s Climate Extra IP66 linear luminaire, chosen for its durability and exceptional efficiency for areas needing reliable, low maintenance lighting. The company’s Platinum Downlights also provide a crisp, clean light in communal areas and are complemented by Celeste backlit panels, which were selected for their uniform light distribution and contemporary finish. Joining them, Luceco’s Contour linear profiles offer discreet yet effective lighting to transitional spaces.
Presence and daylight sensors were also integrated to allow the system to adapt automatically. This reduces energy use in unoccupied areas and enhances the building’s sustainability credentials.
