Biometric security in modern buildings – what electricians need to know

Within today’s cutting-edge security systems, biometric technology has moved from being a futuristic concept to a practical necessity. Biometric technology is one of the most influential developments in security over the last decade but while it is often thought of as a modern innovation, its origins stretch back much further. Historical records show that as early as the 14th century, fingerprints were recognised as unique identifiers in the Persian text Jaamehol-Tawarikh. In late 19th century, French police officer Alphonse Bertillon formalised the use of physical measurements and fingerprints to identify repeat offenders. These developments galvanised the idea that every person carries with them a set of unalterable traits which, if harnessed correctly, can prevent identity fraud and enhance public safety.

Defining moment

Clearly the belief that every person can be identified by their physical features is nothing new and the central advantage of biometrics in building security lies in its ability to provide a definitive confirmation of identity. Traditional methods of access control such as keys, swipe cards and PIN codes can be lost, stolen, cloned or shared. By contrast, biometric traits cannot easily be replicated or transferred.

Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, when referring to this subject it is important to differentiate between biometric authentication and biometric recognition. Biometric authentication focuses on granting access to specific spaces, devices or systems with an individual’s explicit consent. Biometric recognition, on the other hand, is typically deployed in public spaces to identify individuals without their active participation, most commonly by police or government authorities.

For electrical contractors involved in security system design, understanding this distinction is essential. This is particularly the case when it comes to reassuring clients that the systems they are investing in are geared towards voluntary authentication rather than intrusive surveillance.

Now the norm

While sceptics often raise concerns about privacy and civil liberties, the reality is that biometric technology has already been widely embraced in daily life. Most of us use biometrics on a day-to-day basis without giving it a second thought. Fingerprint and facial recognition are now standard features in smartphones, tablets and laptops, where they provide quick, convenient and secure user authentication.

These mainstream applications have helped normalise biometric use, making building occupants more comfortable with similar systems in their workplaces. For contractors, this shift in perception is important, as it means end users are less resistant to biometric solutions and increasingly view them as a natural upgrade to older access control methods.

Unique features

Although card reader based access control systems are cost effective and reliable, biometric technology delivers heightened security by virtue of its inherent ties to the user. As a person’s biometric features cannot be transferred, the approved user must be physically present at the point of identification in order to gain access. While it’s possible to steal a password, PIN or card, you can’t take someone’s finger, face, voice or eyeball – at least not easily!

Convenience is another powerful driver of biometric adoption. Building occupants no longer need to carry multiple access cards or remember complex passwords, making entry faster and more seamless. For electrical contractors, this benefit also translates into fewer support calls and troubleshooting requests.

Furthermore, biometric systems can be programmed to accommodate different access levels and permissions, allowing building managers to set tailored rules for various staff or contractors. By offering both scalability and flexibility, biometric access control integrates neatly with the broader shift towards intelligent building management systems, where CCTV, energy management, audiovisual (AV), lighting, lift systems, digital signage, public address, water management, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), as well as fire detection and life safety systems, converge into a unified digital ecosystem.

Compliance procedure

A frequent concern raised about biometrics relates to data protection. Because biometric information is inherently personal, organisations must ensure they comply with data protection legislation such as the UK’s Data Protection Act 2018 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These frameworks demand strict policies on access, storage and deletion of sensitive information.

However, contrary to common myths, biometric systems do not store raw images of fingerprints or facial scans. Instead, they convert them into encrypted digital templates, secured with advanced methods such as 128-bit or 256-bit AES encryption. In line with GDPR requirements, event logs and stored data are routinely deleted after a designated retention period.

The integration of biometric systems is not just about installing hardware. It also involves ensuring that the underlying network infrastructure is secure, resilient and capable of handling the data traffic generated by biometric devices. This requires a strong grasp of both IT and electrical principles, as biometric access control now sits firmly within the wider context of smart building technology. Electrical contractors who can offer expertise in both installation and cybersecurity will be in high demand as clients seek turnkey solutions that guarantee reliability without compromising data protection.

Setting the standard

Biometric authentication is fast becoming the standard for access control across a wide range of sectors. Ultimately, it represents a paradigm shift in how we think about building security and electrical contractors are at the heart of this transformation, bridging the gap between innovation and application. By embracing biometric access control, they can play a pivotal role in creating safer, smarter and more efficient buildings.
