Electric underfloor heating has become increasingly popular, offering modern comfort and energy efficiency. However, several myths still surround this technology, so Rob Shepherd debunks 10 of them.
Myth 1 – It is not energy efficient
Electric underfloor heating provides high efficiency heating whilst requiring significantly less energy to heat a room(s) than traditional radiator heating systems. Radiant heat is energy efficient as the air temperature is lower than conventionally heated rooms to achieve the same level of body comfort. It also allows end users to avoid wasting energy and can, in fact, be set 5°C lower to achieve the same comfort levels as water based systems, according to a study from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Myth 2 – It is only for bathrooms or kitchens and can’t be used in older homes
Electric underfloor heating can be used to heat the whole house, or specific rooms. It isn’t limited to newbuilds either. Thanks to low profile systems and minimal space requirements, it can be retrofitted into most existing homes. With proper insulation, even older properties can enjoy the benefits of efficient underfloor heating without major remodelling.
Myth 3 – It only works with tile floors
Though often associated with tile or stone, electric underfloor heating is compatible with a wide variety of flooring types. These include laminate, engineered wood, vinyl and even carpet (with the right underlay). There are different systems available to suit each type, making electric underfloor heating a flexible option for most homes.
Myth 4 – It will raise floor levels
Electric underfloor heating will not raise floor levels. Some leading systems use British Electrotechnical Approvals Board (BEAB) approved ultra-thin heating elements where the wire is only 1.6mm thick.
Myth 5 – Floors are uncomfortably hot
This is far from the case – floors can be described as warm, but certainly not hot. With its low operating temperature, electric underfloor heating delivers a comforting, radiant heat across the whole floor area with no cold spots.
Myth 6 – It is difficult to control
Electric underfloor heating systems use an energy monitor thermostat, which offers unrivalled accurate floor temperature control. Its active energy management prompts users to choose the best and most efficient temperature for each room.
Myth 7 – It is expensive compared to other systems
Many people assume that installing, running and maintaining a whole house electrical heating system will be more expensive than, for example, a gas boiler system, but this is not always the case. While the initial cost of installation can be higher than conventional radiators, electric underfloor heating is more energy efficient in properly insulated homes. Because it distributes heat evenly and allows lower operating temperatures (typically between 25-30°C), it reduces the need for high thermostat settings. Over time, especially when paired with smart thermostats and zoned heating it can be very cost effective to run.
Myth 8 – It takes a long time to heat up
Modern electric underfloor heating systems are designed for quick heat-up times, especially when installed beneath tile or laminate floors. Many systems can begin warming a room within 15-30 minutes. With programmable thermostats, it is possible to schedule heating times to ensure rooms are warm when they are occupied.
Myth 9 – Installation is disruptive and complicated
Compared to wet underfloor heating, electric systems are significantly easier and quicker to install, especially during renovations. Many systems come in mat form and can be rolled out and connected quickly by a qualified electrical contractor.
Myth 10 – It’s a fire hazard
Electric underfloor heating is extremely safe when installed correctly. All quality systems undergo rigorous safety testing and are protected by residual current devices (RCDs). When professionally installed and maintained, electric underfloor heating poses no greater fire risk than other electrical appliances in a home.
